Michelle Obama sees herself – and her daughters – in them: the 62 million girls worldwide without the opportunity for education. That is why our FLOTUS “simply cannot walk away from them,” and strives to bring them the equal opportunity to learn.
Part of the presidential Let Girls Learn initiative, #62MillionGirls is a social campaign in partnership with Girl Rising that encourages supporters to showcase photos of themselves on Instagram and Twitter with a message of what they learned in school. “As I’ve traveled the world, I have met so many of these girls — and they are so bright, so determined and so eager to learn,” the First Lady said in an email (CNN).
“The photos will be posted on 62milliongirls.com to highlight the number of girls who aren’t receiving an education,” (CNN). So far, the flooded hashtag has seen the likes of Alicia Keys, Stephen Colbert, Leonardo DiCaprio, Usher and Beyonce, who appeared with the First Lady during this past month’s Global Citizen Festival in New York City.
The initiative falls directly in line with the UN’s fourth AND fifth Sustainable Development Goals of ‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’ and ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls,’ (learn more here.)
