Our Team: Lindsey’s Summer in the Rainforest!
Hello POINT readers! This is my last post for the summer 🙁 On Saturday I will be embarking on the trip of a lifetime. As you have probably figured out by now, one of the causes that is most important to me is the environment. Nothing we do today matters if we destroy the earth in the process. I am very passionate about this and love learning about the history of the environmental issues we face today, and what we can do to help.
I have the opportunity to spend the summer living in New Zealand and Australia with the School for Field Studies to learn about rainforest management and preservation strategy.
In the first month-long session I will be in New Zealand and Australia, learning about how the two countries’ discinctly different histories of settlement and development played a role in the current state of their forests and natural resources. I’ll also learn about land-use practices and cultural beliefs, political structure and policy, and biogeography. During the second session I will be living on a rainforest preserve in the Atherton Tablelands in Australia to do field research and experiments on restoration and conservation.
Most of my time will be spent either in the classroom or in the field (aka the RAINFOREST!!!!) but I will also have some time to explore. If you have any suggestions on places I should visit let me know in the comments on here or Facebook, or via twitter (@LindseyBee747 or @pointapp) – I would love to hear from you!
Being able to contribute to the scientific community that is working to restore our rainforests is a dream come true! Trees improve air quality, general mental and physical health, and provide a habitat for many different organisms. Preserving our forests is extremely important to our global ecosystem and vital to our future. I am proud to say that I will be working with and learning from researchers and professors who have devoted their lives to this and know that it will fuel my passion for the environment.
I’ll leave you all with a little slideshow of some pictures from past programs:
See you again at the end of August! Keep on being awesome POINTers!
